Tending

The soil metaphor gets a verb, and it arrives as a correction to itself. Soil sits there being fertile; tending is what someone does to it. It is the only word in the vocabulary that names labour rather than substrate, which makes it the term most owed to counting rules that do not yet exist.

One whole, not many entities

The structural question the Commonplace left open, the dual entity strategy, is answered in one sentence, and the answer is not yet, and maybe not at all. One body running a coworking space, a cafe, and a technology research lab. What keeps that from being a land grab is the clause in the next entry.

The maturity model that lets work leave

Emergent work is held inside the cooperative as a project, with a stated path by which it can become its own thing. The phrase is as if it is soil-like, soil that can release what grew in it. That is the difference between a commons and a holding company: the cooperative is the stage a venture passes through.

The cooperative does not own the community of practice

The most consequential rule of the weekend, because it decides what the cooperative is for. The community of practice is not an asset of the co-op, not a membership funnel, and not a thing to be claimed. That is the Commonplace's concentric circles restated as a duty: the co-op tends the outer rings without expecting them to travel inward.

Scenius travels

The filed public benefit, extended past the building. Scenius leaves an address: the collective intelligence travels beyond 1515 Walnut into virtual space, welcoming aligned technologists wherever they are. Two days earlier, at the launch, the same idea was said plainly: our practice is not bound by place. The word now has an implementation attached and a price beside it.

The membrane

An unusual thing to say while trying to recruit: that membership is first a demand. It carries tax consequences, and the boundary around it is held deliberately rather than by default. The corollary, said publicly two hours later, is what makes it honest: the public benefits do not require membership, which stops the membrane from being a velvet rope.

Trust is the soil

The best fusion of the two vocabularies, and it came from the technical side. Platforms entered a field of existing trust and harvested it without tending, leaving a social dust bowl. The lesson drawn in the same breath is a discipline rather than a lament: the commune did not change agriculture, the organic label did, by making the practice legible to a market.

Counting rules

The formation record's central unresolved problem, given a shape precise enough to be written. Counting rules name what is a gift and therefore left off the ledger, and what is work and therefore stays on it. Deciding what is a gift is deciding what the ledger cannot see, so the generous half of the definition is also the invisible half.

The witness line

The rule that governs every instrument the cooperative builds, and the reason this book can be read at all. An instrument stands between a record too large to hold and the person trying to read it: it transduces, it does not decide. The cost is that a record built this way will always look incomplete, because it always is.

Attestation, arriving twice

The same word enters the weekend from two directions and is never reconciled. In the afternoon it is cryptographic: one party vouching for another with a stated confidence, recorded as its own entry on a graph. Late that night it is social, and half a joke. A vouch is cheap and computable; a witnessing is slow and accountable.

The trust graph, and the question under it

Trust made computable, plural: there is no single graph, and every community computes its own result from its own data and its own rules. Recognising each other's intelligence is a dimension of trust, which makes the thing curation rather than control. A trust system whose privacy model is a negotiation between parties does not yet have a privacy model.

Care work, still uncounted

Said publicly at the launch as the definition of the venture commons: before anyone writes a note or forms an entity, most of what happens is voluntary contribution in which trust is load-bearing. It is the word that appears in every register of this weekend and in none of its ledgers. The gap did not close.

A matrix with prices on it

The class matrix survives from formation intact, participation described by appetite rather than rank: not tiers, not classes, a matrix. Two days later it acquires a rate card. Both statements are true and describe different objects. A matrix with a price on each cell and one governing class at the end of it behaves, from outside, like a ladder.

Playtest

The word used publicly for what members do with the cooperative's tools, and it is doing real work. Playtesting is not free labour and not user research: it is what you do with something you already own. The bylaws carry a pathway to cooperatively owned intellectual property, which is what makes the word accurate.

Understanding, then confidence

A small theory of civic participation, offered while looking at a governance interface. A translation layer makes documentation legible, legibility produces understanding, and understanding is a step toward the confidence that turns a vote from a formality into a signal. Read against this weekend it is also a rebuke: the register climbed steadily from Friday to Sunday.

The four documents

The most concrete plan made across the weekend, stated in ninety seconds with nobody objecting: a finance and accounting committee, chartered by the incoming board, owes four documents. The last of them is the Commonplace's clearest decision, community reinvestment over profit sharing, given a mechanism instead of a preference, and the only place the steering metaphor attaches to actual money.

1. Counting rules: naming what is patronage-worthy.
2. A labour schedule: benchmarking rates for technologists around Boulder and Denver.
3. A treasury policy: naming the patterns of reconciliation and how the body holds itself to account on ledger.
4. A payout, cash-out and reinvestment schedule.

The ninety-day clock

A real deadline, and the only one in this book that is not self-imposed: within ninety days of the first member signing, the cooperative voluntarily adopts a patronage plan. Every economic idea in either book is downstream of it. It has not started, because no member has been admitted. It waits on a signature the cooperative controls.

The human hour

The most ambitious economic proposal of the weekend, and the one with the least support behind it. Fiat is not itself a sound unit. An hour is: the basis of every timetable, labour role, and labour card. The unit stays sound only until you ask whose hour, valued how, which needs the labour schedule of document two.

Monetary polyculture

The frame that holds the hour, the compute credit, and the grant: a shift from monetary monoculture to many kinds of money, each carrying a different perception of value. Polyculture is a management practice, and more work than a monocrop. Plural money means plural accounting.

Give-first, and the ledger it keeps anyway

The counterweight to the whole accounting programme. On the Friday night a member hosts the group's model capacity from his own subscription, states his usage aloud, and stops at seventy-five percent of the week: a pooled resource, governed by a stated rule, with no ledger.

Stake-backed promises

An agreement with capital locked behind it, resolved by a named arbiter: a state account, a proof, or a council of machines with a human fallback. The capital is not spent, it is encumbered, still earning and not withdrawable until the obligation unwinds. The secretary's translation is professional, not cryptographic: a lawyer's trust retainer, the same primitive with precedent attached.

Risk markets, not prediction markets

The cleanest mechanism design here. Bet on whether a thing will fail and you are paid to keep quiet about the flaw you find. Underwrite the risk instead and you are paid only when it does not happen, so the finder is paid to say so. Keep it beside Goodhart's Law from the Commonplace, reached from the opposite direction.

The state of the place, said plainly

One entry made of numbers, kept because a commonplace book full of vocabulary should carry one. Around nine to eleven of twenty-five cold desks, four of seven hot desks, roughly half capacity, break-even. Two years of the space carried personally by one member, the books now transitioning to the cooperative: the second of the Commonplace's two practical drivers, closed out.

Corporate incantation

The weekend's best piece of legal anthropology, offered half as a joke and entirely meant. Certain sentences must be spoken during a board meeting for the act to be lawful, not because the words are magic but because their absence is evidence of a failure of due care. The fast layer of a cooperative is made of speech.

Shown in formation

The decision to hold the board meeting live, in front of the launch audience, rather than describe it afterwards. Called to order at 4:08 under Section 3.10, quorum confirmed at five of six, three officers elected, adjourned at 4:12. It is the clearest thing this cooperative has done that a conventional entity would not have thought to do.

Three motions, one vote

The script called for three motions and three separate votes. The room combined them into one, and rather than tidy it away, a director named the irregularity aloud on the recording and asserted why it was lawful. The Commonplace's rule that there are no failures could not hold here: amendment and original sit on one tape, four minutes apart.

The recording is not the record

Said in the same breath as the live meeting, and it is the sentence that keeps this practice honest. The distinction matters more here than in most organisations, because this one is trying to run its governance through its information systems. A cooperative whose memory is excellent and whose minutes are late has built the wrong half first.

Thin and thick

The sharpest question anyone asked all weekend, and it came from outside. Three answers arrived within two minutes and none agreed: thin, thin but raising investment, very thick. It is answered two days later by splitting the axis: thick on the ventures, thin on the community. See One whole and The cooperative does not own the community of practice.

Exit to community

Co-ownership as a destination rather than a starting point, offered warmly and slightly out of sequence, since the group had already begun at ownership. Build the ownership around what turns out to work rather than a projection of what should. The companion discipline cuts against a cooperative's habits: keep the co-op underneath the thing you delight people with.

Economic democracy

The most political sentence in either book, and the one connecting the entity to something larger than its own members. Worth holding against the structure it describes. The cooperative's design separates ownership from governance, investor capital with no vote, and separates benefit from ownership, since the public benefits reach people who never join. Neither is quite the sentence.

The entity will have to mature

Said publicly, which is the notable part. The cooperative is a partnership of people; growing into a venture cooperative means a later form in which organisations can be members. The Commonplace's deferred second entity, restated at a launch party as a known limitation rather than a plan.

Augmentation, under test

The formation-era principle restated in its shortest form, then immediately tested by the weekend around it. The test came that night, when a model produced eight episodes of a story unattended while the room slept, and the room woke up quoting it. Whether it survived as a practice is not settled anywhere on the tape.

Instrument

The unit the cooperative builds in, defined precisely for once: an instrument is a specific type of record, in practice a table, that recognises a lexicon within itself. A log is what happened; an instrument is a log with a point of view about what is worth counting. Choosing the columns is the political act; everything downstream is arithmetic.

Technology research lab

Named alongside the coworking space and the cafe, the lab is the first time in either book the cooperative describes itself as a producer of knowledge rather than a holder of conditions. What it lacks is a subject: nothing says what this lab researches, for whom, or who reads the result. It is a framing waiting for a programme.

Local hosting

A key consideration for implementing a community of practice, the Commonplace's most far-reaching aspiration reappearing in an operational sentence rather than a visionary one: a memory layer of the cooperative's own, running somewhere the cooperative controls. The commitment survives; the mechanism for paying for it does not yet.

Kin, not tools

The proposition that new intelligences should be met as relations rather than managed as instruments, argued on candidly prudential grounds rather than sentimental ones. It sits uneasily beside augmentation, which is a claim about tools. The weekend used both vocabularies freely and never chose. Recorded here as a live tension rather than a synthesis.

Hyperstition

A fiction that makes itself real, used all weekend as a verb: talking a future into a record until a machine hands it back as a story. It names what the room was actually doing. It has no witness line: a phrase can be generated, repeated, and lodged in the vocabulary inside a single evening, which is the next entry.

The web remembers

The most quotable line of the weekend, and the one with the least human provenance. It came from a story a model generated overnight from the room's vocabulary. The room repeated it and proposed it as its emblem. It is the clearest test case for the rule the cooperative says it lives by: a good sentence is not a finding.

Culture technology

The last morning's diagnosis: not more tooling, but a worldview simple enough for ordinary people to place these new things inside. A guest observed that the cooperative is thin at the top and short of cultural depth. The proposal is to invent new network spiritualities and return to animism; the secretary's amendment locates it on a continuum of plural lifeways.

The inside language is a barrier

The most honest sentence in this book, said near the end by the person most responsible for the condition it describes. Both books are made of that inside language. The intention set before the launch, keep it accessible, watch the systems vocabulary, was honoured in public and steadily abandoned across the retreat. It is a diagnosis without a rule attached.

If it doesn't work everywhere

The sharpest test of the weekend, accepted without objection. Boulder is a hospitable place to build this; a town that is not must be able to pick the same tools up, turning the Commonplace's retrofitting existing civic infrastructure argument into an engineering constraint: build for the neighbourhood that already exists, including the ones that do not share your politics.

We were always going to be birds

The weekend's joke, and its own best warning. In the story the machine generated, the raptors solve every coordination problem they face and then evolve into chickens anyway. Someone called it very wu wei, which is generous. Read straight it is the correct caution for a body that has just spent three days on coordination mechanisms, and it is entered last because it is the only line here that laughs at the rest.
