techne.coop · an introduction, for newcomers and builders

The Common Information System

One shared record of who Techne's members are, what they have agreed to, what each has contributed, and what happens next. Kept in common, readable by every member, honest about how settled each fact is, and checked by machinery anyone may inspect. This page introduces it twice at once: in plain words for a newcomer, and, in the small print each section ends with, by exact address for a builder.

§1

What this is, and why it exists

Techne is a cooperative: a studio owned and governed by the people who use it. Ours is organized in Colorado as RegenHub, LCA, and works from a shared space on Walnut Street in Boulder, where members gather to build things together.

Every durable community keeps its memory somewhere outside any one person's head. A town has its minute book and its deed drawer; a parish kept its register; a ship keeps its log. A cooperative needs this more than most, because it runs on a particular kind of confidence: that what was agreed can be found by anyone it binds, that what was contributed is counted by rules written in advance, and that what happens next is decided in the open. That confidence needs a home, and this system is that home.

The name is meant literally, one word at a time. Common: it belongs to the members together, not to an office or an administrator, and what it says about you, you can see. Information: not opinions and not marketing, but the facts the cooperative knows about itself, people, promises, money, work, and plans, with their history kept. System: kept in working order by rules rather than by heroics, so that when something changes, the record changes with it and shows its work.

§2

What it holds

Four kinds of fact, which together are enough to run a cooperative.

aPeopleEvery person has one entry that stays with them as their relationship changes, from first visit to full membership. Who you are, what kind of member you are, and what that lets you see and do.
bAgreementsThe documents that govern: articles, bylaws, membership agreements, and policies, published at techne.coop/legal. Everything that binds you is findable by you, with its version and standing plainly marked.
cContributionsWhat each member has put in, whether work, patronage, or capital, and the share of results that follows. Counted by written rules adopted before they apply, with every figure traceable back to the events that produced it.
dHappeningsEvents, sessions, and open invitations to play, practice, and work together. What is coming, who is hosting it, and what came of it afterward.
holds · PRD v0.3 §4, §5 · four primitives, agents, resources, events, agreements, and nothing outside them
§3

Three doors, one room

The record is one body of fact with three ways in. The doors differ; the room does not.

browse

Pages like this one: a member directory, a calendar, a reading room of agreements. If you can read a website, you can read the record. No training required.

ask

Nou is the cooperative's reading and drafting instrument. Ask in plain language and it answers from the record, citing where it read. It retrieves and drafts; members and the board decide, sign, and govern. Always.

verify

Beneath both sits the ledger: every entry in the order it happened, none erased. A correction is a new entry, so the history of a fact travels with the fact. Anyone who needs to check, can.

holds · PRD v0.3 §7 · the augmentation bound, Law X: the instrument may compute, retrieve, draft, surface, propose; never decide, sign, govern
§4

The record says how solid each fact is

Most systems present everything with the same confidence. This one does not. Every fact wears a mark, and the marks are few enough to learn in a minute: green for what an authority or the members have made solid, blue for what is written and in review, a neutral outline for what is planned, red for a genuine open question.

Filed Accepted by an authority outside the cooperative, such as the Colorado Secretary of State. As settled as a fact gets.
Ratified Adopted by the members and re-verified through a checked gate. The cooperative's own strongest word, and deliberately the slowest to appear.
Drafted Written, published, and in review. Real, but not yet wearing the strongest mark.
Anticipated Planned and expected, with a date wherever one exists. A plan, and marked as one.
Open A genuine question, named rather than hidden, usually with the body responsible for answering it.

As of this writing, nothing on this page wears Ratified. The governing documents are published in their latest versions at techne.coop/legal, and the strongest mark appears only after a gate re-verifies every citation against the adopted text, following the members' gathering of August 14, 2026. A record that awarded its best word casually would not be worth keeping. The discipline runs one way only: a plan is never dressed as a fact.

holds · PRD v0.3 §5 status contract · VS v1 §5, the G-R gate · until it passes, a Ratified mark anywhere is itself a test failure
§5

What the record promises, and how each promise is checked

Five commitments, and none of them is a slogan: each one is enforced by the system's own structure and tried, continuously, by tests that attempt to break it and pass only when they fail to.

iOpen by defaultThe rules, the counting formulas, the database schema, and the code that runs the record are published. Another cooperative could take them and start its own without asking permission, and that claim is written as a procedure meant to be executed, not admired.
iiNothing vanishesEntries are added, never erased; a correction is a new entry that cites what it corrects. This is not a policy but a refusal: the database itself rejects any attempt to edit the past, and a test tries that attempt on every change.
iiiOnly what is neededThe record keeps the minimum about each person and says plainly what it keeps. Tax identifiers have no column anywhere in the system at all, which is the strongest privacy policy there is.
ivThe arithmetic holdsOne member, one vote, enforced as a rule of the database rather than a habit of the interface. Balances are never stored numbers someone could quietly edit; each is recomputed from the full history every time it is shown.
vEvery rule cites its sourceEach of the record's access rules names the bylaws section that authorizes it, thirty of them at this writing, and a check refuses any new rule that arrives without its citation. Authority here is cited, never assumed.
holds · IM v0.1 §6 conserved quantities · VS v1 §4 assertions by attempted violation · AM v0.1, thirty anchored policies · VS v1 §8, the walkaway procedure

For builders and agents

Everything above has an exact address underneath it. The system is specified by a series of governing documents, and each one distills into something a machine can run, so the distance between the promise and the code stays inspectable.

Concretely: the schema applies to a fresh database and refuses, at the data layer, anything that would break a conserved quantity. The thirty access policies each carry the bylaws citation that authorizes them, and a lint rejects any policy without one. The verification workflow proves the refusals by attempting them. The ledger of work has no dates, only readiness conditions, and its status table reads as a set of reasons. Agents contributing to the build begin at the operating contract in the repository root, whose first rule is the whole method: stop and ask rather than invent.

And the walkaway test is the promise made executable: from the published artifacts alone, on infrastructure the cooperative does not control, a stranger can rebuild the record and arrive at the same balances. If that ever stops being true, the tests say so before we do.

if you are reading this as a newcomer

The record is the first thing we would show you anyway. The governing documents live at techne.coop/legal, the studio is at 1515 Walnut Street in Boulder, and the door, like the record, is meant to be open.
